Lady Lazarus chronicles the posthumous lives of towering 20th century literary couple Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Debra, a well-meaning, but bumbling receptionist ushers Hughes into Purgatory where he and Plath are reunited for the first time in thirty-five years since her suicide. If they are ever to escape Purgatory, Plath and Hughes must first reconcile who and what went wrong as their marriage dissolved and their literary careers sky-rocketed. Meanwhile, the question hangs: are they Heaven or Hell-bound? They may discover that they never want to leave, but no one stays in Purgatory forever. With equal parts dark humor and heart, Lady Lazarus examines the fine lines we draw between art and life, hate and love, faith and doubt, and the redemptive power of forgiveness. |
