| Description: |
Gary, a young handicapped reporter, visits a Catholic brothers’ community to collaborate with Brother Sam on The Green Gospel, a book linking ecology with biblical stewardship of the planet. He meets two guests: Mary Ann, a former nun, and Esme, a young woman in a distressing marriage. The community is in crisis after Brother Charles imposes bottom-line standards on their calligraphy business and decides to computerize it. Everyone takes sides. Expert calligrapher Brother Elias retreats into protective silence. Brother Mateo openly rebels. Mary Ann pleads for patience. After a failed sexual encounter between Gary and Esme, both leave suddenly. Then Gary returns in tears and confesses his hidden agenda: gathering evidence for a smear campaign against the community. Utterly confused, he asks to become a brother. Surrounded by turmoil, Brother Alfred fights to keep his flock together as they reexamine their ties and strive to remain open to one another. |
