Title: SHOWTME!

Description: Proton’s play for the Dionysian Festival condemns the Athenians for murdering his teacher, Socrates. Symbolizing their inhumanity, one character dresses in a monkey costume, with a human mask over it. But Proton’s actors, Hippodirges and Potamus, are inept; rehearsal’s a disaster. Sophie, a self-confident female playwright, appears and they agree to perform her play instead. Unfortunately, Sophie’s being hounded by a thunder-throwing deity, Dionysus himself. She resists all divine inspiration, preferring her natural human insights. Dionysus is a mute god; he only communicates using Charades (the cast and audience must guess his lines). He corners Sophie and insists that she get drunk, thus opening her mind to his inspirations. If she doesn’t, he’ll slay her and take her to Hades. When she refuses, Hippodirges volunteers to spend eternity in Hades so that Sophie (surprise--Sophocles writing under an assumed sex) can continue writing deathless plays.
