| Description: |
Weightless is a one-act play (performance time aprox. 35 minutes) that consists of a series of monologues to be performed by one or more actors as desired. The characters are both real women who are or have been involved in the space program, and fictional women dealing with the challenges and triumphs inherent to women in an area of science that is intrinsically about breaking past our natural boundaries. The monologues are interspersed by actual quotations from men commenting on women’s place in the exploration of our universe. The play demonstrates that the exploration of space is (or should be) particularly attractive to women because its essential struggle mirrors that which women have always faced – to defy the “natural limits” that they have always been told they have. In addition, because of the space program’s relative youth, it’s possible for women to envision making a mark on the field – becoming a pioneer in a new science.
