| Description: |
The Medal begins during the Second World War. Edward Corcoran, the male lead, is recommended for, but does not receive, a Silver Star. Edward, furthermore, considers what he did not heroic but a failure of nerve. Throughout the rest of his life, he carries a burden of guilt that, in conjunction with other factors, sours his initially happy marriage, his career ambitions and his relationship with his only child.
As he nears death in a nursing home, his mind and memory deteriorate; and he comes to believe that he actually received the medal. His wife determines to get the medal for him as a final act of love and reconciliation. Her triumph over the Army bureaucracy, however, comes too late.
