Micky McGroarty, an Insurance agent by day and a drummer by night, is astounded by the ongoing confrontations between his mother, Elva E. Lee, and her sister, Melissa S. There has never been a family event in which a verbal and often physical battle has not occurred. The funeral of Mickey's Uncle Tony is no different. Uncle Tony used to escape the brawls by going to the gold course or to Disneyland. Mickey's Dad, Patrick, a history professor, who has come to the funeral with a kidney stone and bowel impaction, escapes daily into US Civil War history. It isn't until the moment of truth arrives in the form of a letter, to be read only upon Tony's death, that Patrick decides to reveal the facts of the long standing feud. Other characters include Phoebe, Mickey's soul mate cousin, her husband, Hawk, a former linebacker for the Chicago Bears, and the high spirited matriarch, Norma, who fuels the fires of discontent as the family unravels. |
