| Description: |
“On the Inside”, is set in a women’s maximum security prison. Its genesis was a one-week intensive play writing and acting class I led with inmates in a Connecticut prison, although the characters, stories, and plot are all imagined. The play explores how individuals seek to establish trust and intimacy, and the struggle to create a sense of unity out of disparate voices, experiences and emotions. Even the theatre artist is not exempt, as she must ultimately also lay bare her own vulnerabilities, to be a part of the group she created. Despite the verbal and physical violence which often threatens to breaks the project apart, the group makes jokes and spurs its members on, so that writing and acting become tools they use to survive. The title, “On the Inside” is a reference to both being incarcerated, and the secret stories we each harbor inside ourselves. |
